Artist Biography

Rick has been drawing and painting the many aspects of life's trials and tribulations over the past 30 years. He has wrestled with the discovery of the humor, irony, and helplessness of the human condition. As a schooled painter in the classical style from the school of visual arts where he studied with paintoonist Jerry Moriarty his work has been exhibited at galleries in the US and abroad. The value of his unusual point of view has been recognized, displayed, and collected. His art in is the permanent collections of the University of North Carolina's Weatherspoon Gallery, and the Museodearte Moderna of Catanzaro Italy and private collections. In new york city he has exhibited in dozens of shows in galleries that include& Pictogram Gallery, The Joe and Emily Lowe Gallery, Schrieber/Cutler Gallery, Eastman Wahmendorf and Mary Delahoyd Gallery.

Rick recalls his childhood memories

"I've been painting and drawing since I was about three. My dad was an architect so I always had plenty of paper and drawing tools to play with. Through music and art, I always have expressed my surprise and awareness of human predicaments. Capturing that moment of confusion, discovering a problem, that moment of irony, that self-conscience twist of fate, that unsolvable situation fascinates me. Humor is always evident, I always loved the irreverent humor of Mad Magazine, Gahan Wilson, the National Lampoon, and the music of Frank Zappa. The job of an artist is not to give people what they want or expect, it is to give them something different, something that challenges their ideas of what art is or should be."

Featured art - Gauche Series

Using brilliant color with contrasting and overlapping perfectly formed shapes, Rick executes a planned but seeming random series of brush strokes. He has created captivating visuals that invite friendly confrontations. The subjects are simple and playful but belie their serious intent.
